At OBRC, we help prepare the next generation of lactation consultants by providing our own Pathway 3 Clinical Training program. This program helps those who qualify to obtain clinical experience hours through our 4-month, full-time, clinical rotation schedule. Trainees will gain experience in a variety of settings including: inpatient and outpatient areas, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Oklahoma Mothers’ Milk Bank, as well as clinics out in the community. Completion of the OBRC P3 Program fulfills the clinical training requirement to be eligible to sit for the exam put forth by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) for designation as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
OBRC has collaborated with the OUSHC College of Allied Health to create an RD/P3 program to help HSC RD Students to simultaneously study to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Students who chose this program will apply to the OBRC P3 program after being accepted into the OUHSC Dietetic Program. The benefit of this RD/P3 program is that students can obtain 2 of the 4 months of required lactation clinical training hours during their final months of the OUHSC Dietetic Program. A general outline of this schedule is below.
- 1-month Community Rotation with OBRC
- 1-month Lactation Elective with OBRC
- Graduate OUHSC Dietetic Program
2-months as a full-time OBRC P3 Trainee (immediately following graduation)
